Monte Alto I.S.D. Focused on the Future: New Interim Superintendent Dr. Rivera

The Monte Alto I.S.D. School board announced in July that Dr. Richard Rivera has been offered the opportunity to serve as the interim Superintendent of Schools.  “I strongly believe that Dr. Rivera is eminently qualified to continue the strategic direction of the District,” says President Olga Chapa.” He has led the academic work that has put Edcouch-Elsa I.S.D. on its current trajectory, and we are excited to offer the Interim position to someone who knows firsthand how to get things done.”

A Mercedes Tiger Alumni, resident in Weslaco, Dr. Rivera currently serves as a Weslaco I.S.D. school board member. Over his 50 year career in education, he has developed his expertise in serving students, families and staff as a coach, teacher, principal and Superintendent. If he had a chance to start all over again, he would still pursue the Education field. “Education is an equalizer, it equalizes everything,” says Rivera.

Dr. Rivera has been at work for one week and has already set priorities for the district and is creating a strategic plan. He plans to finalize the middle school gym project, balance the budget, figuring out teacher pay raise, getting all schools equipped and implement more technology.

“I am excited and honored to have been chosen as the new interim superintendent and look forward to working collaboratively with the school board, staff, parents, the community and I will be reaching out to the business community as well. I’m committed to providing all students with an exceptional educational experience which will assist them with becoming productive members of an ever-changing global society” says Rivera.
