Welcome to 3rd Grade: The Big Transition!
Third grade is a year of incredible growth and newfound independence. Our students move from basic skill acquisition to applying their knowledge in creative and analytical ways. We focus on building "stamina"—whether that’s in reading a longer novel, solving multi-step math problems, or working collaboratively on a group project.
Our Academic Focus
In 3rd grade, the curriculum expands to include more specialized concepts and deeper inquiry.
Literacy: Students dive deep into Chapter Books. We focus on "Reading to Learn," where students analyze character traits, identify themes, and back up their ideas with evidence from the text. In writing, we master the art of the five-paragraph essay and explore cursive handwriting.
Mathematics: This is the year of Multiplication and Division! Students learn to master their facts (0–12), understand fractions as parts of a whole, and begin calculating area and perimeter.
Science: We become investigators of the natural world. Our units cover the life cycles of plants and animals, the forces of motion (push and pull), and how fossils tell the story of Earth’s history.
Social Studies: We look at "Then and Now." Students explore indigenous cultures, local history, and how geography influences how people live and work.
